Spending time as a family is pretty much our favorite thing, so when I saw a chance to review Mölkky through Tryazon, a lawn game from Finland, I jumped at the chance! Often times we will get together as a family and have a delicious meal and then the kids are off to run and play, but the adults end up sitting and chatting all night. Don’t get me wrong, I love catching up with everyone, but I love to get up and move, and who doesn’t like some healthy competition?
When I received the Mölkky game in the mail, I loved the fact that it came with a box to store it all in. It is not too big and can easily be stored on a shelf in my garage. I love that it has the straps that make it easy to transport to family get togethers or even the park. The box was secured together with staples. While this should not be a problem, the bottom of the box broke within one day and I had to secure it on my own again. So far it is still holding up great, but I think some people who don’t want to have to deal with that aspect of having to fix the box if it comes apart.
The game itself was lots of fun!
You start with these 12 Skittles – yes, that is what they are called, and yes I wanted to eat Skittles after I played it a few times! You set them up close together to start out the game.
The winner of Mölkky is the person who gets to 50 first. You cannot get over 50, you must get exactly 50 or else you will lose points and go back to 25 points. So you have to use some strategy in this game, which made it all the more fun! You have one throwing Skittle and you use it to knock down the numbered Skittles. If you knock over 3 Skittles, then you have 3 points, but if you knock over just one Skittle, say the number 7, you get 7 points. If you don’t knock over any Skittles, you get three strikes and you are out!
Wherever the Skittles fall over, that will be the place you set them back up for the next turn. This is what makes the game interesting!
Some of our Skittles landed out on the edge of the world, and everyone wanted that 11! Made for some fun competition!
There is an app for Mölkky by Tactic, but between 3 of us that downloaded it, we could not get it to work. We were able to add all the names, but when it came time for the next persons turn, it would skip by and not allow you to add their points. The game came with a little booklet that allows you keep points with a pen or pencil, and that worked great with no problem.
I think everyone enjoyed the game and I for one cant wait until we get to play it again. My husband and I even loved having a one on one game for a date night!
If I were to rate Mölkky, I would give it a 9 out of 10. The game is a fun way to get up and move, socialize, and have some fun. The reason I would give it a 9 is because I had to fix the box, and some of the Skittles were not as smooth/had some dents right out of the box. I know that is not a big deal, but when someone spends money on a product, they want to see it looking in a brand new condition when they purchase it.
All in all I loved the game and I am so glad we own it! This is definite one of my favorites as young kids and adults alike enjoy it!
If you want to purchase your own Mölkky set, you can find it HERE
