Reading is a foundation for learning
As I have watched my 5 children, now ages 6-19, go through school, I see that reading is the foundation for learning. If a child doesn’t read fluently and comprehend what they’ve read, they will struggle all their years in school. Tests they take, instructions for those tests and other assignments, spelling, math, english, science, all require reading.
Oh how I wish that I knew about Learning Dynamics years ago. I put my now 7th grader through a different, very expensive program when he was 11. We expected, and were told, that he would develop skills to help him read and comprehend better. The only result was that he seemed to gain a little more confidence. He still struggles with anything that requires reading. I continue to wish we could go back to preschool age with him and do a few things differently. I believe that if I had Learning Dynamics when he was little, it could have changed some things for him.
What is Learning Dynamics?

First your child will learn 8 letters and their sounds beginning with letter M. Then they will learn to blend those letter sounds. After blending they are given a book with ONLY those letters in it. This is one of the many ways that this system is different from what they will do in kindergarten. You continue this through the whole alphabet, introducing over 50 books to your child. PLUS as it teaches all of the letter-sounds, it helps children develop language and comprehension skills through activities that teach sequencing, rhyming, classification, same/different, and opposites.

Our experience
I noticed this year in my child’s kindergarten class, after they learned letters and sounds, they were given a little book to read but it contained words that confused him, like the word “said”. From the reading rules he was taught, he could not sound this word out.
I went to the library in hopes that I could find a book with sight words my son was learning and I was frustrated because I found simple books with sight words but they also had hard words, like “welcome”, that discouraged my child. When we started doing Learning Dynamics a few months ago my child was thrilled when he got to read his own book all by himself. Being in the middle of the school year, he already knew his letters and sounds. So I just had him review the letters with the flashcards, along with some of the worksheets that went along with the letters-just for fun. He really enjoyed that. After reviewing them, I let him read the books that come after those letters. I even had my, below grade level, 4th grader be a part of “teaching” his little brother, giving him a little practice.

I can’t tell you how amazing my kindergartner felt reading on his own. He was so thrilled that he could read all the words on his own by blending the sounds together with his “motor mouth”. He was so proud to have his own books and had to put them in a bag to carry around everywhere. We went to a school band performance and he brought his bag of books because he would ,”be bored while I wait for it to start”. Usually he begs to bring his tablet, but since he was so excited about his books, he chose those instead. HECK YES!
I regularly go to the school to help with testing and other things the teachers need help with. I noticed with my child that just the blending technique they use in Learning Dynamics helped him tremendously with sounding out and reading words. His confidence skyrocketed! I have to admit though, that life got super insane (even for that 15 minutes, 3 times a week). I couldn’t be consistent with the reading program so we took a break. This week is the last week of school, so I’m excited to add Learning Dynamics to our summer reading schedule and get back on track. Summer is the perfect time to do it, without all the other homework that school brings and it will help keep him on track for first grade. When he went in for his end of year testing his teacher said he did very well and was able to read her all the things on the test. Today I got back his end of year test results and he is above grade level on his reading!!

I love this program and think it can definitely help with blending. The way they teach blending is so much better than what my kids would do at school. If your son already knows his letters, you can review as you like with the first part of the program and then you can skip to the parts where they blend letters. Meg- Which reading program did you purchase for $3,000?
When one of my boys was in 4th grade I put him through the Brain Works program. The people were really nice but we just didn’t see results like we were told could happen. He gained a little confidence but still his test scores are extremely low. I was really disappointed. I feel like if I had Learning Dynamics when he was preschool age, that it could have made a huge difference for him.
Would this work for a struggling reader (10 yrs), or is it not really a fit for his age? He probably reads 1-2nd grade level now.
Heather, I am so sorry you have a struggling 10 year old. When my son who really struggles was 10, I put him through a very expensive program and it didn’t help much with his reading. So I know how hard it is to see them struggle with school. What the people at Learning Dynamics suggest for older kids is to have them teach the program to younger kids. I believe it can help, but at this age I just don’t know for sure what kind of results you would get. It definitely would be a cheaper option than what I did and really couldn’t hurt to try. Just be sure to be consistent if you do try it. I wish you the best as you find what works for your child.

Valetie, I keep telling them they need to create a program for older kids. They do say, “In the event of an older child looking to learn, we often use them as a “reading tutor,” and they can learn by going through the process with the younger child.” Good luck! I hope you find something that works for your child. School will go so much smoother if they can read and comprehend well.

I have a two year old son who is around older adults every day ( me- mom-42, dad-63, Grumps- grandpa- -67 , and BeBe- grandma- 72 ) so we never speak to him in baby talk and he does everything we do – ex: fix the toilet with grumps, bike stuff with dad & grumps , read with me and BeBe, we never say you are you are too young or you can’t . So he says words that amaze me know that I have no idea where he learned it but of course he cannot read. I want him to be ready for school and be ahead of the game .he also does mother morning out 2 days a week from 9:15-1:15 . He also he’s 39 mins a day on tablet broken up over 2 different times where he plays educational games, sorry giving all the background to help with answer ! 😊 But my question is is he too young for this program yet ?? His birthday is April 2016 ? I don’t want to him to hate reading , because he is frustrated because we are starting to early !

Peggy, I would say give it a try. It sounds like he might thrive on something like this. It starts out very simple. If you see that it begins to stress him out then pull back and hold off for a bit. you can always pick up where you left off and move forward with the program. As his mom I think you would be able to feel what he needs. But I would say with all the educational stuff he does already, this would be a great addition. You could make it part of your mother morning time. It only takes 15 min every other day.
Isn’t this program Frontline Phonics? Did Learning Dynamics buy them out? I’ve had this program in our home for 15 years & it is great!
Julie, I don’t think so but I could be wrong. When I met with the CEO he made it sound like this is what it has been called forever and they came up with the program through their own research. It is a great program though!

FIOR, I’m not sure if you are asking if this would work for your child or if you are telling us that it worked for your child. If you are asking, then I think it is worth a try. It is extremely basic so if he already knows his letters and sounds then skip on to the next part where they starts blending sounds. Although, It wouldn’t hurt to start at the beginning and learn the fun songs and do the cute activities. I would do this before spending thousands on other programs. If you are telling us that it worked for your 7 year old then YAHOO!! Way to go.
Meg, I have a K and pre-K. We did another program, very similar to this, with my K and he did great. He’s reading chapter books in K! But, some of the advanced concepts like open and closed vowels, ti- sounds, prefix, suffix, etc. were not covered in that program. Much of that has been obtained through reading. However, there are other programs that cover this material.
How much material does this program cover? What is the extent of the curriculum? I wasn’t able to gather this information from their site. Regardless, I am heavily considering the program for my pre-K child. Thanks for your review!
This program doesn’t go into the depth of reading that you’re talking about. It does teach letters, sounds, blending and vowels with vowel sounds along with rhyming, classification, opposites, same and different etc. It’s a program that gets your child reading and gives them confidence that they need to continue reading and learning. I believe confidence is key as children learn to read. I wish I could give confidence to my middle school age child. He has never been a fast reader which, is really pushed at school, and has made him feel stupid. Because of his lack of confidence, he doesnt even try when it comes to reading on tests. He skips it and guesses, which rarely brings a good grade.
I think this is a wonderful program for preschool and kindergarten age children. Best wisges to.you as you choose what you feel is best for your child.
