Table Manners FHE

Song: Kindness Begins With Me

Scripture: Luke 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.  OR

Proverbs 16:24
24 Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Lesson:  Talk about how you feel about your family’s table manners. Share how you feel when people have poor manners at the table?(sad, like nobody cares about each other, embarrassed)

When we have good manners we are showing those around us that we care about them.

Read Manners at the Table by Carrie Finn

or watch this video…or BOTH!!

Think back to dinner you ate tonight, ask “Did we have good manners at dinner tonight?   What are some good manners we had? How did you feel when ______. What are some bad manners we had? How did you feel when ________.

Make some rules for your family.  Using a chalk board, posterboard, or dry erase board, have a family member write down some suggestions your family has for rules at the table. Print them out or you can use the one I made for my family HERE , to hang on your fridge or somehwere to remind your family about the manners you all agree to have at the table while eating.

Explain the pig and its purpose, that it will sit on the table and when someone brakes a manners rule, they get the pig.  Talk together and choose the consequence of being the one with the pig in the end, whether it’s cleaning up dinner, doing the dishes, etc.

Testimony: Bear testimony of the importance of family and showing respect to one another. Heavenly Father put us in families for a reason and is so happy when we love and care for each other…

Now implement it at the dinner table throughout the week.  Then take the family out to dinner to a nice place to put them to the test.

This will be a fun memory for our family, I hope it can be for yours too.

How do you teach your family good manners at the table?

I love this idea so much! I can see that everyone will try harder to have good manners, and maybe I will get some help with the dishes a few times! Thanks!
